Faded jeans have indigo that has been worn or washed lighter in places, usually the thighs, seat and knees. Light fade is soft and low in contrast; heavy fade is high in contrast. Fade is separate from shade. Denim fades because indigo stays in the outer layers of the yarn around a white core. Factories create fades with stone and enzyme washes, laser finishing and distressing.
Faded jeans are jeans whose indigo blue has been worn or washed lighter in some areas, usually the thighs, seat and knees. A light fade is a soft, low-contrast lightening. A heavy fade shows strong contrast, with pale areas next to dark denim. Fade is separate from shade, so dark jeans can still have a heavy fade.
Why indigo denim fades
In most denim, the lengthwise warp yarns are dyed with indigo and the crosswise filling yarns are left undyed. Indigo also behaves differently from most textile dyes. It has a very low affinity for cotton, so it stays in the outer layers of the yarn and leaves a white core inside.
"Unlike almost all other commercially successful dyestuffs, the indigo dye concentrates in the outer layers of the cotton yarn and fiber during the dyeing process." Cotton Incorporated, Denim Fabric Manufacturing (ISP 1010)
When the blue surface wears away, the paler core shows through. That is why jeans lighten first where they rub or crease: across the thighs, on the seat, at the knees and in the folds at the hip. Factory washes and laser finishing remove indigo from the surface on purpose, so the same lighter areas appear before the jeans are ever worn.
Light, medium and heavy fade: what the labels mean
These names are trade shorthand, and brands use them loosely: two brands can call the same pair "light fade" and "medium fade". A photo or a physical sample tells you more than the word on a label.
| Label | What you see | Common ways to make it |
|---|---|---|
| No fade (clean) | Even colour down the whole leg, with no lighter zones | Rinse wash only, or raw denim |
| Light fade | Slightly lighter thighs, seat and knees, with soft edges between light and dark | A short stone or enzyme wash, light laser shading |
| Medium fade | Clearly lighter front thighs and seat; whiskers may appear at the hip | A longer stone or enzyme wash, laser whiskers |
| Heavy fade | Bright, pale areas beside dark panels, often with whiskers and worn edges | Laser fades combined with abrasion and distressing |
Fade and shade are two different things
Some online shops list "Shade" and "Fade" as separate fields on a pair of jeans. Shade is the overall colour of the denim: dark blue, mid blue, light blue or black. Fade is how much lighter the worn-looking areas are than the rest of the leg.
A dark shade with a heavy fade has deep blue panels and bright thighs. A light shade with no fade is pale all over and even. When you describe the jeans you want, give both.
Fade patterns and their names
- Whiskers are lines at the front hip and crotch, where the denim folds when you sit.
- Honeycombs are a net of creases behind the knee.
- Stacks are rings of fading at the hem, where a long leg bunches over the shoe.
- Pocket fades are the outline of a phone or wallet carried in the same pocket every day.

On raw denim, these patterns follow the way the wearer sits, walks and bends. In production, whiskers and crease lines can be drawn with a laser or added by hand, so every pair in an order looks the same.
Worn-in fades and factory fades
Raw and rinse-washed jeans start dark and even, then fade slowly with the owner's own wear and washing. Our article on what rinse wash jeans mean covers that starting point.
Factory fades are made before the jeans leave the factory. The main methods are stone wash, enzyme wash, acid wash for a marbled look, laser finishing and hand distressing, and many styles combine two or more of them. Our guide to denim washing techniques compares them.
At Kuzgunlar Textile in Gaziosmanpaşa, Istanbul, washing and finishing covers rinse, stone and enzyme washes, laser finishing and distressing. Each order is matched to a wash standard approved on the sample, and wash tone is compared with that standard for every batch.
How to specify a fade for your own collection
If you are developing faded jeans for your brand, the fade needs the same attention as the fit. A brief that only says "light fade" leaves too much to interpretation.
- Send a reference garment, or clear photos of the front and back.
- Say where the fade should sit: thighs, seat, knees, hip whiskers or hem.
- Give the shade and the fade separately, for example "mid blue, medium fade, no whiskers".
- Choose the fabric before you approve the wash. A sulfur bottom or sulfur top is a sulfur dye added before or after the indigo to deepen or change the shade, and Cotton Incorporated notes that a sulfur top performs differently in garment washing than a sulfur bottom. The same wash recipe can therefore look different on another fabric.
- Approve the fade on a washed sample and keep that sample as the wash standard for reorders.
Our denim collections list the finishes for each product line. Men's jeans and women's jeans are made in rinse, stone, enzyme, laser and distressed finishes, denim jackets in raw, stone wash, acid wash and vintage fade, and ripped jeans with hand and laser distressing.
Faded jeans made to your wash standard
Kuzgunlar Textile is a denim manufacturer in Istanbul producing jeans, denim shirts and denim jackets for fashion brands, as private label or to your own design. The minimum order is 100–150 pieces per style. A sample takes 7–10 days once the brief is clear, so you approve the fade on a washed sample before bulk production, which takes 3–5 weeks depending on the quantity and approvals. Send us your reference and quantities.

Frequently asked questions
What does light fade mean on jeans?
Light fade means the jeans have slightly lighter areas, usually on the thighs, seat and knees, with soft edges and low contrast. The overall colour stays close to the original shade.
What does heavy fade mean on jeans?
Heavy fade means strong contrast between pale, worn-looking areas and the darker rest of the leg. It often comes with whiskers at the hip and worn edges.
Are faded jeans the same as light-wash jeans?
No. Light wash describes the overall shade of the denim. Fade describes how much lighter some areas are than the rest. A light-wash pair can have no fade, and a dark pair can have a heavy fade.
Can a factory repeat the same fade in a reorder?
A repeatable fade starts with a wash standard approved on a washed sample. At Kuzgunlar Textile, wash tone is compared with the approved standard for every batch. A different fabric can change the result, so keep the same fabric for reorders where you can.
