Denim Washing Techniques Explained

The main denim washing techniques — rinse, stone, enzyme, acid, laser and ozone — and the look each one creates.

Content Team 2 min read

The main denim washing techniques are rinse wash, stone wash, enzyme wash, acid wash, laser finishing and ozone treatment. Rinse keeps a dark colour; stone and enzyme washes soften and fade the fabric; acid wash creates high contrast; laser finishing draws fades and whiskers precisely; ozone can lighten colour with less water.

Denim washing techniques are the processes that give jeans their final colour, fade and hand feel after sewing. The six most common are rinse wash, stone wash, enzyme wash, acid wash, laser finishing and ozone treatment, and many styles combine two or more of them.

The main techniques

Common denim washing techniques

Rinse washShort water wash to remove starch and pre-shrinkDark, even indigo
Stone washTumbled with pumice stones or similar abrasionFaded, soft, worn-in
Enzyme washEnzymes break down surface fibres and indigoEven fade, smooth hand feel
Acid washStones soaked in an oxidising agent create contrastMarbled, high contrast
Laser finishingA laser removes indigo in a programmed patternPrecise whiskers, fades and patterns
Ozone treatmentOzone gas lightens the colourLighter, cleaner tones

Combining techniques

A typical vintage look might combine laser whiskers with an enzyme wash and a light abrasion on the thighs. The more steps a finish has, the more important it is to approve a physical wash standard, because small changes in time or temperature affect the result.

Distressing

Rips, abrasions and frayed hems are added by hand and with laser finishing. See examples in our ripped jeans collection.

Choosing a wash for your collection

  • Decide the look first (dark and clean, faded, vintage, high contrast).
  • Ask which fabrics work with that wash.
  • Approve a wash standard on the sample.
  • Prefer washes you can repeat in reorders.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between stone wash and enzyme wash?

Stone wash uses abrasion from stones; enzyme wash uses enzymes to break down surface fibres. Enzyme washing usually gives a smoother, more even fade.

What is laser finishing on jeans?

A laser removes indigo in a programmed pattern to create whiskers, fades or designs that repeat precisely across an order.

Can different washes be used on one style?

Yes. The same pattern can be produced in several washes, each approved on its own sample.
